The Hcg Diet And Its Scientific Basis

The HCG diet has its basis in a branch of medical science known as endocrinology. This is the specialty that was followed by Dr. A.T.W. Simeons, the researcher who developed the principles of the HCG weight loss method almost sixty years ago. Endocrinologists study the functions of hormones as well as the glands that produce hormones. As HCG is itself a hormone, it makes sense that a study of the HCG weight loss program would be based in endocrinology.

What Is a Hormone?

If you have ever had a close call or engaged in “extreme sports,” your are familiar with the effects of one hormone. Adrenaline is the hormone that gives us that extra jolt of energy and mental alertness when there is reason to believe that our lives are in danger. Suddenly, we are able to run faster or perform amazing feats of strength. Every perception is heightened and sharpened as we look for a way out of danger. Adrenaline can literally mean the difference between life and death.

Other hormones have more mundane, but no less important functions. HCG for example helps to ensure our survival while we are still in the womb.

HCG’s Role In Pregnancy

During the first three months of pregnancy, HCG strengthens the uterine lining and ensures that the fetus has a safe and nutrient-rich environment in which initial development can take place. It also protects the fetus from the mother, odd as this seems. However, remember that a person’s physical functions are usually separate from one’s psychological and emotional ones. A mother’s immune system, for example, has no innate intelligence and therefore is incapable of making value judgments. If not for HCG, the mother’s antibodies might attack the fetus as if it were a virus or other outside invader due to the presence of the father’s genetic material.

HCG’s Role in Weight Loss

Although HCG’s job is essentially done once a child is born, a large amount of it remains in the child’s system until adulthood. Eventually, the modern diet robs us of our natural supply of HCG, which has largely disappeared by the time we reach our early twenties.

Hormone replacement therapy with HCG accomplishes two things. First, it breaks down excess fat deposits, making them more available as a fuel source.  Then it helps to maintain a high metabolic rate so that this stored fat can actually get used when the subject is on a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD).
