Self Help Groups: Empowering Women

By  |

Congress Vice President, Rahul Gandhi believes that India can't become a superpower unless the women are empowered.

Millions of women thank Rahul Gandhi and Congress for launching Self Help Groups (SHG) across India. An SHG is a village-based financial intermediary usually composed of 10–20 local women.Members make small regular savings contributions over a few months until there is enough capital in the group to begin lending. Funds may then be lent back to the members or to others in the village for any purpose.

It is because of SHG's that women in rural India are able to get out of debt from money lenders and are able to sucessfully generate self employment for themselves.

30 million women have been empowered and have found a new identity for themselves in the society with the scheme. Indian National Congress further plans to reach out to more than 70 million women in the next 5 years. And will bring more such schemes that will benefit each and every section of the society.
