Next Queen of Spain Letizia Ortiz Draws Comparisons to England's Kate Middleton for Fashion Sensibilities and Modest Backgrounds
Princess Letizia Ortiz will soon become the next Queen of Spain as King Juan Carlos announced his abdication after ruling the country for 39 years on Monday (June 2, 2014). He will be succeeded by his son, Letizia’s 46-year-old husband, Prince Felipe de Borbon.
Letizia was sometimes compared to Kate Middleton for their modest backgrounds. Like the Duchess of Cambridge, the 41-year-old lady wasn’t born to nobility. Her father was a journalist while her mother was a nurse and hospital union representative from a working-class background. She grew up in a middle-class family with two younger sisters in Oviedo before moving to Madrid.
The pretty Letizia then obtained a masters in broadcast journalism and became a well-known TV presenter and reporter. She anchored the most viewed evening newscast in Spain: “Telediario 2” as well as worked for Spain’s state-run TVE, Bloomberg TV and CNN+. She even won the Madrid Press Association’s prestigious Larra Award, for the best Spanish journalist under the age of 30.
Letizia Ortiz then gave up her high-flying career to get married with Prince Felipe in 2004. The couple now have two daughters together, Infanta Leonor de Todos los Santos of Spain and Infanta Sofía de Todos los Santos of Spain.
Besides, Princess Letizia draws comparisons to England’s Kate Middleton for their fashion sensibilities. The brunette beauty previously favored Armani suits in pale, business-like colors but she has been more daring with color in recent years. And despite being a national style icon in Spain, is a repeat-wearer as she has recycled some certain outfits.

Before tying the knot with Prince Felipe de Borbon at Cathedral Santa María la Real de la Almudena in Madrid 10 years ago, Princess Letizia Ortiz married a writer and a high-school literature teacher but the coupe divorced in 1999.
